These Companies Offer Discounts for Nurses

I was lounging by the pool in Cancun last week(!) with my friend Kristy who also happens to be a flight nurse. One afternoon over margaritas and guac, she gave me the down low on discounts offered to nurses by retailers nationwide. Prior to our discussion I hadn’t even thought to ask about discounts for healthcare workers before making clothing and household purchases. It seems I’ve been missing out on some significant savings.

I do have to say that as I spoke with a few area retailers on the phone today to verify the nursing discounts she mentioned, a few companies seemed confused by my inquiry. It seems some of the discounts Kristy has been receiving are based on her good looks rather than her bad-A flight nursing status. Regardless, here are a few retailers offering discounts to nurses and nurse practitioners.

1. New York & Company

Affordable women’s clothing retailer New York & Company will knock 15% off in-store purchases for nurses, police officers, firefighters, EMTs and military personnel-and their spouses.

2. Sleep Number Beds

Every nurse practitioner knows that sleeping is essential for performing on the job. For NPs working odd hours, good shut-eye can be hard to come by. So, mattress retailer Sleep Number offers an astounding 35% discount for healthcare workers.

3. Cell Service Providers

Cellphone service providers like T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon often offer specials for healthcare providers. Check to see if you are eligible for a discounted rate the next time you re-up on your cell plan. Typically, discounted rates save you 15 to 25 percent on your monthly plan. Companies may also have discounts arranged with cell service providers so drop your employer’s name as well to see if you can rack up even more savings.

4. Theme Parks, Concerts, and Events

Often, amusement parks, concert venues, and other similar attractions offer discounted entry to nurses. For example, nurses receive significantly discounted admission at Six Flags Theme Parks as well as savings on certain Disney World hotels. Check for discounted pricing the next time you purchase tickets to an event or attraction.

5. Insurance

While you may not think about the cost of your auto insurance on a daily basis, some companies offer discounted premiums to healthcare workers. The next time you renew your car insurance, or even rent a car, inquire about discounted rates for nurses.

6. Trending Discounts

While many companies do not offer standing discounts for nurses and NPs, they may offer one-time perks or temporary savings. Websites like corporateshopping.com and nursepoints.com show the latest applicable offers.

Next time you make a purchase, ask about discounts for healthcare providers. You may even be like my flight nurse friend Kristy who somehow receives discounts for nurses that don’t technically exist. What do you have to lose?
