5 Sites to Keep Up with Evidence Based Practice on Your Lunch Break

As nurse practitioners we’re busy. Chances are you find yourself constantly at that tipping point where time spent on your personal and professional lives is out of whack. You can barely complete the responsibilities of your position and meet the expectations of your employer, much less find time to keep up to date with changes in healthcare. It’s essential, however, to keep yourself in the loop with the latest in medicine so that you’re delivering the best care possible.

Fortunately, there are a few resources out there to help nurse practitioners stay up to date at a glance. Here’s how to keep up with evidence based practice on your lunch break:

1. 2 Minute Medicine

2 Minute Medicine is hands down one of my favorite go-to’s for a quick shot of information. The site delivers the latest medical headlines helping NPs stay informed when it comes to recent studies and healthcare advances.

2. Merck Manual

Not only does Merck Manual publish healthcare news, the site also serves as a robust resource for nurse practitioners. Detailed drug information as well as medical articles giving a quick, at-a-glance overview of commonly encountered drugs, diseases and conditions. The resource also has a section for patients, where you can direct individuals in your clinic for more information about their diagnoses.

3. JAMA

Widely known for its journals, JAMA also publishes a wealth of content online covering the latest research and opinions in medicine. A clinical review section of the site also presents case studies helpful for nurse practitioner’s continued education. Some articles on the site even qualify for CME credits.

4. Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library is a collection of six databases containing different types of evidence-based healthcare information to help guide nurse practitioners in their decision making. While payment may be required to access full articles, a basic version of content is offered free of charge and is sufficient to give NPs a glance at the latest medical developments and research.

5. AAFP

While MD focused, the American Academy of Family Physicians is a robust resource for primary care nurse practitioners as well. The site publishes detailed content on a variety of medical conditions serving as a clinical guide. Content is organized in an easy to read format and often contains charts and algorithms NPs may apply to practice.
